Course Description
AORN's Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is a nursing education course developed by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). The purpose of this course is to prepare the registered nurse for the entry level practice in peri-operative nursing, with a focus on intraoperative care.
The course consists of 26 online, web based learning modules, a didactic portion along with preceptored clinical experience. Emphasis will be placed on performing those functions directly related to scrubbing and circulating in the operating room. A rotation through the six major services occurs during this 6 month internship. The intern will spend time in each service.
Upon successful completion of the course, each intern receives a certificate of completion from AORN and CEUs.
Course Topics
The course consists of 26 online, web based modules covering the following topics: the surgical environment, peri-operative assessment, aseptic technique, sterilization and disinfection, safety in the surgical suite I & II, scrubbing and circulating, anesthesia, drugs and solutions, wound healing, positioning of the surgical patient, needles and suture, sponges and counts, surgical instruments, care and handling of surgical specimens, scrubbing, gowning and gloving, skin preps, surgical draping, electrosurgery, tourniquets and implants, patient/family education, specimen care, latex allergy, Endoscopic surgery, laser safety, patient & family education, documentation, environmental sanitation, and professionalism.
